Moss agate is a composite form of chalcedony, formed from primarily white or milky quartz with green inclusions of iron oxide and manganese oxide. These inclusions tend to form as dendritic or fractal branches that resemble moss, giving the stone its name. Red moss agate contains additional iron inclusions that oxidized as the stone formed.
